Day 1 Sessions:

  1. Introduction to using Alice
  2. Motion (translation and rotation) during scene set-up
  3. Problem Solving and Storyboard Design (Participants work on building a simple Alice storyboard)
  4. Storyboard -> Code
  5. Revisiting translational and rotational motion

Day 2 Sessions:

  1. Functions (built-in) and parameters
  2. Interactivity and Events
  3. Camera Control
  4. Participants work on building a world for their storyboard

Day 3 Sessions:

  1. Repetition
  2. 3D animation tips
  3. Sound
  4. Work session: Build a storyboard for an MTV video or commercial, at least four frames

Day 4 Sessions:

  1. Group reviews, discussions of storyboards (Storyboards on the wall)
  2. Sample Student Projects (Presentation and discussion)
    • Group discussion: How to grade them?
    • Our grading rubrics
  3. Work Session: Build a world from storyboard (second one)

Day 5 Sessions:

  1. Animation Fair: Demo of Day 3-4 worlds
  2. File management: Web pages and videos
  3. Presentation of materials available from http://www.aliceprogramming.net

  1. Lists (Don)
  2. Our instructional materials & those from Virginia Beach (Steve)
  3. State and CSTA curriculum guidelines (Steve)
  4. Work session: Teams make topic lists

Day 7 Sessions:

  1. Mutable variables (Rani)
  2. Team Presentation of topic lists from Day 6
  3. Sample unit plan - presentation
  4. Alice exams
  5. Work session: Teams develop a unit plan (related to topic lists)

Day 8 Sessions:

  1. Advanced Functions
  2. Presentations of unit plans from Day 7
  3. Sample lesson plan - presentation
  4. Work session: Teams develop a lesson plan and build a demo world (the lesson plan should be related to their previous unit plan)

Day 9 Sessions:

  1. Arrays/Lists
  2. Presentation of lesson plans and demo worlds
  3. Work session: Teams build a second lesson plan, including a project assignment

Day 10 Sessions:

  1. Transitioning to Java
  2. Presentation of second lesson plan and project assignment
  3. What the participants are expected to do, going forward

Five third week sessions will be held concurrently:

For Middle School Teachers:

  1. Santa Clara University, Santa Clara

For High School Teachers:

  1. Presentation High School, San Jose
  2. Ralph Bunche High School, Oakland
  3. Palo Alto High School, Palo Alto

These sessions are offered as opportunities for workshop participants to practice their Alice skills by running their own short class on Alice, supported by the workshop leaders, at or near their own schools with some of their own local students.
