About
Yi Fang a full Professor in the
Department of Computer Science and
Engineering,
Santa Clara University.
He received Ph.D. from the Department of Computer
Science,
Purdue University, West Lafayette.
He is the inaugural Faculty Director for the Cunningham Shoquist Center for Applied AI and Human Potential, Santa Clara's fourth center of distinction, an interdisciplinary AI hub where faculty, students, staff, and industry partners collaborate to contemplate, design, and deploy AI technologies that will benefit society and serve humanity.
He has also served as a senior consultant and technical advisor to several large companies, startups, and law firms.
Research
His research interests span information retrieval, natural language processing, and machine learning.
He is particularly enthusiastic about principled approaches that are scalable, efficient, and generalizable
in real-world problems.
Teaching
He has created and taught several new AI courses both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including
machine learning, data mining, natural language processing, web search, and information retrieval.
He received the Teaching Excellence Award in 2017, the Brutocao Family Foundation Award for Curriculum Innovation in 2024, and the University Award for Recent Achievement in Scholarship in 2025 at Santa Clara University.
